Jahorina

Jahorina reaches 1,916 metres southeast of Sarajevo and held the women's alpine events of the 1984 Winter Olympics, and it has since been developed into the largest ski area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with around forty kilometres of piste served by modern lifts including detachable chairs, a base village of hotels and apartments at around 1,300 metres, and a season that usually runs from December into March or April. Snow is generally more reliable than at Bjelasnica because of the aspect and altitude. In summer the lifts run for walkers and mountain bikers and the mountain is used for hiking, with meadows and forest and views toward Sarajevo and the surrounding ranges.

When to go

December to March for skiing, with January and February most reliable. June to September for walking and biking. Weekends and Bosnian and regional holidays fill the resort and the road.

Honest expectations

The resort is small by Alpine standards and lift queues build at weekends. Accommodation quality varies widely. The mountain road is steep and can be difficult in snow. Summer facilities are limited compared with winter.
