Bjornlandet National Park
Fire-scarred old pine forest on a rocky ridge in southern Lapland, with trees that have survived repeated burns.

Bjornlandet, opened in 1991 with about eleven square kilometres and enlarged in 2017 to about 24, protects forest that escaped logging because the ground is too broken to work - a ridge of boulder and rock outcrop with pine growing on thin soil between. Many of the pines are over three hundred years old, some over 450, and carry fire scars, in some cases from several separate fires, because forest fire was a normal event in this landscape before suppression. Dead standing timber and fallen trunks are everywhere, which supports a long list of beetles and fungi that need exactly that. Trails run through with viewpoints from the ridge over the surrounding forest and lakes.

What to expect
Trails are rocky and awkward. There are no facilities inside the park. Mosquitoes are severe in summer. It is remote and needs a car.
