Brownsberg Nature Park

Brownsberg delivers the interior without the expedition: a forested plateau rising 500 metres above the drowned forest of the Brokopondo reservoir, close enough to Paramaribo for a long day trip yet wild enough for howler monkey dawns, toucans in the canopy and agoutis raiding the clearings. Trails drop from the plateau lodge to waterfalls - Leo and Irene Val the classics - through butterfly-thick forest, and the escarpment viewpoints stare across the lake's island-studded silver to the horizon. It is the country's most visited nature park precisely because it compresses so much Suriname into one accessible mountain.

What you actually see

• The reservoir panorama - Brokopondo's drowned-forest islands from the rim.
• Leo and Irene falls - the waterfall trails off the plateau.
• Howler dawns - the canopy chorus from the lodge clearings.
• The butterfly trails - morphos and heliconians along the paths.

When to go

The drier windows - roughly February to April and August to November - keep the access road and trails kindest; waterfalls run fullest just after rains. Overnighting buys the dawn chorus and dusk viewpoints day-trippers miss.

Honest expectations

The final climb road is rough and sometimes 4x4-only - most visitors come on organised day tours, which is the easy answer. Lodge facilities are basic and maintenance cycles; bring expectations sized to a nature station, not a resort. Trails are steep and slick after rain.
