Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf capital, and its timing is what makes it useful: the east coast season runs roughly from May to September, exactly when the monsoon has shut down the south and west, so the country always has a working coast. The main point is a long, mellow right-hander that peels off the headland and suits intermediate surfers, with a scatter of other breaks up and down the coast for beginners and for those wanting something heavier. The village itself is a single sandy road of guesthouses, board hire and cafés with a deliberately unhurried air. Beyond the surf, the lagoons behind the beach are full of birds and crocodiles, elephants are regularly seen along the road at dusk, and Kumana National Park and the ancient rock temple at Kudumbigala are within easy reach.

When to go

May to September is the season, when the east coast is dry and the swell is working; outside it the village largely closes and many places shutter entirely. July and August are the busiest and best for waves. Elephant encounters on the roads are most common at dawn and dusk.

Honest expectations

It is genuinely seasonal, and arriving out of season means finding a shut village and flat sea, so timing is everything. The main point gets crowded at peak times, and the local surf etiquette is worth learning before paddling out. Wild elephants along the roads at night are a real hazard, so avoid driving after dark. Facilities are simple, and it is a long haul from Colombo.
