El Soplao Cave

El Soplao was found by miners working zinc and lead in the hills behind the Cantabrian coast at the start of the twentieth century, and the mine tunnels are still how you get in. The standard visit runs on a small mine train and then continues on foot through decorated chambers. What sets it apart is the quantity of helictites, thin mineral filaments that curl and branch in directions gravity does not explain, alongside conventional stalactites and columns. A longer adventure route, with helmet, lamp and overalls, goes into undeveloped galleries and old workings. The temperature inside stays cool all year, which makes it a reliable wet-weather option.

When to go

It works in any season and any weather, which is useful on the wet north coast. Tours run on fixed departures and sell out in August and at Easter, so book ahead. The adventure route runs less often and has a minimum age. Weekday mornings are quietest and the guides noticeably less rushed.

Honest expectations

Photography is restricted on the standard tour and the lighting is theatrical rather than natural. The visit is short for the price once you add the drive up a slow mountain road. Tours are in Spanish by default and English is not guaranteed. It is cool inside all year, and summer groups can be large and noisy.
