Grotte Merveilleuse

The Grotte Merveilleuse opens off the corniche road immediately west of Jijel, a limestone cave discovered during roadworks in 1917 and later opened to the public, with a walking route of several hundred metres through chambers hung with stalactites, columns and flowstone, lit and equipped with steps and handrails. It is the most visited cave in the region and a standard stop on a drive along the corniche, taking under an hour to walk. The temperature inside stays cool through the summer, which is part of the attraction in August. A ticket office and a few stalls sit at the entrance, and the coast road continues west from the door.

When to go

Year round; it is coolest and most welcome in high summer. One to two hours including the drive. It can be busy on summer weekends with queues at the entrance.

Good to know

Lighting is coloured and dated, which some find garish. Interpretation is minimal. The route is short. Steps are wet and slippery in places. It is a roadside stop rather than a destination.
