On the grand boulevard of the Passeig de Gracia stand two of Gaudi's most fantastical apartment houses, UNESCO masterpieces of Catalan Modernisme. Casa Batllo shimmers with a scaly, bone-like facade and a dragon-back roof, while La Pedrera, or Casa Mila, ripples in undulating grey stone crowned by surreal chimney warriors on its rooftop, both extraordinary within and without.

Both are ticketed, popular and pricey, so book ahead. They are apartment buildings turned museums, so it is the architecture and rooftops rather than furnished homes. Seeing both in a day, plus the Sagrada Familia, is a full Gaudi program.
