Castells - Catalonia's Human Towers

The castell is Catalonia at its most literal about community: teams called colles, hundreds strong in matching shirts and black sashes, build towers of people up to nine and ten storeys high in town squares, working on a base crowd - the pinya - where dozens lock arms to absorb any fall. Strength rises first, then lighter climbers, and finally the canalla - helmeted children - scramble up the outside to crown the tower, one raising an arm at the summit as the crowd erupts and the whole structure dismantles itself in controlled reverse.
