Barcelona Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas

The Barri Gotic, the Gothic Quarter, is the medieval heart of Barcelona, a labyrinth of narrow stone lanes, hidden squares and the great Gothic cathedral, layered over the Roman city. Beside it runs Las Ramblas, the famous tree-lined promenade thronged with strollers, flower stalls and street life, leading down to the harbour and the Boqueria market.

When to go

Year-round; the lanes are cool and shaded in summer heat, and atmospheric in the evening. Early morning gives the quarter quiet before the crowds.

Honest expectations

It is very touristy and, on Las Ramblas especially, plagued by pickpockets and tourist-trap eateries, so watch your belongings and avoid the promenade restaurants. The quieter back lanes hold the real charm. It is busy at almost all hours.
