Basque Pelota

Pelota covers several games with a common principle: a ball struck against a wall, the frontis, alternately by two players or pairs. The variants differ by implement. Pelota mano is played with the bare hand, and players tape their fingers heavily because the ball is hard and the hands take permanent damage; it is the most followed professionally. Pala and paleta use wooden bats. Cesta punta, the fastest, uses a long curved wicker basket strapped to the arm and produces ball speeds recorded above three hundred kilometres an hour, which is why players wear helmets. Almost every Basque village has a fronton, often beside the church, and informal games run constantly. Betting is traditional at professional matches, called out by bookmakers in the stands.

When to go

Year-round; the professional season runs mainly from autumn to spring with major matches in Bilbao, San Sebastian and Pamplona. Village courts see informal play at any time, particularly on summer evenings.

Professional match schedules are published locally and in Basque or Spanish only. Village games are informal and not staged for visitors. The rules take some watching to follow, and commentary is not in English.
