Yeosu Cable Car

Opened in 2014, this was the first cable car in Korea to cross open sea - about one and a half kilometres between Jasan Park on the mainland and Dolsan island, running above the strait and the Dolsan bridge. Two cabin types operate: ordinary ones and crystal cabins with a transparent floor, which cost more and queue longer. The ride takes around thirteen minutes each way. The view is of Yeosu's harbour, the shipyards, the bridge and the islands scattered south, and the standard advice locally is to go at dusk: the city lights, the bridge lighting and the boats make the evening crossing considerably better than the daytime one. Both terminals have observation decks and cafes, so a return trip with a stop is the normal pattern. It closes in high wind, which on this coast is not unusual.

• The sea crossing - about 1.5 km above the Dolsan strait.
• The crystal cabins - transparent floors, for a higher fare.
• The harbour view - port, shipyards, bridge and islands.
• The evening lights - the reason to time it for dusk.

When to go

April to June and September to November, timed for sunset and after. Weekends and holidays queue heavily, especially for crystal cabins. Closed in high wind.

Honest expectations

Ticketed, and the crystal cabins add cost and waiting time for a modest difference. Thirteen minutes each way. The view is of a working industrial port, not unspoiled coast.
