Suncheonman Bay National Garden was built for an international garden exposition and kept afterwards, and it is now one of the largest public gardens in the country, laid out along both sides of a stream with a planted hill in the middle to look down from. Sections are planted in the styles of different countries, there are long beds of seasonal flowers, a wetland centre and a great deal of lawn. A small elevated monorail runs from the garden towards the coast, where the bay itself holds vast reed beds and tidal flats that fill with migrating birds through autumn and winter. Garden and bay are normally visited together as one long outing.

What you actually see

  • The national gardens - the sections planted in the styles of different countries.
  • The central hill - the planted mound with a spiral path and views over the whole site.
  • The reed beds - the boardwalks through the tall reeds at the edge of the bay.
  • The bay birds - the migratory flocks over the tidal flats in autumn and winter.

When to go

Spring for the flower beds and autumn for the reeds, which turn gold and are at their best in late afternoon light. The bird numbers peak in the cold months. Allow the best part of a day for both halves, and note that the walk from the garden to the reed-bed boardwalk is long if you skip the monorail.

Honest expectations

The garden is very large and very flat, which means a lot of walking on hard paths with limited shade, and in midsummer that is punishing. Between the main flowering periods the beds can look thin for the ticket price. The monorail costs extra and queues. The reed beds are the more memorable half, and some visitors wish they had gone straight there.

Nearby

The Nagan folk village and the temple of Songgwangsa are within reach, and Yeosu is under an hour away.
