Otgol is a cluster of about twenty tiled and thatched houses at the foot of Palgongsan on the outskirts of Daegu, settled by a branch of the Gyeongju Choi family in the seventeenth century and occupied by their descendants since. The buildings that carry designations are the Baekburam, a study hall, and Bogwoltang, the clan shrine, with a lotus pond and old trees among the lanes. What makes it worth the short bus ride is not any single structure but the fact that it is neither restored for visitors nor emptied: laundry hangs, dogs bark, gates are shut because people are inside. It sits directly in the path of Daegu's expansion, which is what makes its survival notable and also precarious. There is no ticket office, no shop and no signage in English. An hour covers it, and the road continues up to Palgongsan and Donghwasa.

What you actually see

  • The clan houses - about twenty, tiled and thatched, lived in.
  • Baekburam and Bogwoltang - the study hall and shrine.
  • The pond and old trees - among the lanes.
  • The ordinariness - unrestored, unstaged, still a hamlet.

When to go

April to June and October. Any weekday. It is never crowded - that is much of its appeal.

Honest expectations

There is nothing laid on: no ticket, no facilities, no English. Houses are private and gates are closed. If you want interpretation and a restored set, this is the wrong village.

Nearby

Donghwasa and Palgongsan are up the road; central Daegu is a short bus ride.
