Chimaek is chicken plus maekju, beer, and the pairing is close to a national institution. Daegu claims it with some justification: several of the largest Korean fried chicken franchises were founded here, and the city has run this festival in Duryu Park since 2013 over about five days in July. Dozens of chicken brands set up stalls, breweries pour, and there are stages with music through the evening. It draws crowds in the high hundreds of thousands. The timing is its main problem and its main character - Daegu is reliably the hottest city in Korea and July is the peak of that, so the festival happens in genuinely oppressive heat and humidity, which is part of why the beer sells. Entry is free and you pay per stall. It is not a food festival in the culinary sense; it is a large outdoor drinking event with fried chicken.

What you actually see

  • The brand stalls - dozens of chicken franchises side by side.
  • The beer tents - breweries pouring through the evening.
  • The stages - music programmed across the park.
  • The scale - hundreds of thousands over five days.

When to go

July, over about five days, in the evening - daytime heat in Daegu makes afternoon attendance unpleasant. Weekday evenings are marginally less crowded.

Honest expectations

Daegu in July is extremely hot and humid. It is crowded, queues for the popular stalls are long, and seating is limited. This is chain fried chicken, not local cooking.

Nearby

Duryu Park and E-World are on the site; Seomun market and Kim Gwangseok street are in the city.
