Kim Gwangseok Street

Kim Gwangseok was a singer-songwriter of the late 1980s and early 1990s whose spare, sad songs about ordinary lives - a thirtieth birthday, an old soldier, a letter to a father - are known to essentially everyone in Korea. He was born in Daegu, and he died in 1996 at thirty-one. In 2010 traders in the Bangcheon market district turned the alley beside it into a memorial: about three hundred and fifty metres of murals, sculptures and painted lyrics, with his music playing from speakers along the wall and small stages where buskers perform at weekends. There is a statue on a bench that people sit beside. It is free, takes an hour, and is entirely ordinary as a street - a row of cafes and shops behind the paintings. What carries it is that Koreans arriving here already know every song coming out of the speakers, and visitors who do not will find it a pleasant alley and little more.

Any season; late afternoon and evening are when the buskers play and the cafes fill. It is central and easy to add to a Daegu day.

Without knowing the songs, it is a decorated shopping alley - the emotional weight is entirely in the music. Short. Commercial along its whole length.
