Osulloc Tea Museum

Amorepacific began planting tea on Jeju in the 1980s on rocky volcanic ground in the island's south-west that had no agricultural use, and the Seogwang fields are the result. The museum opened in 2001 and is free: a collection of tea bowls and utensils spanning centuries, an account of Korean tea history and of the plantation itself, an observation deck over the rows, and a walk out into the fields. The cafe alongside is the real traffic driver - green tea roll cake, green tea ice cream and a long queue at weekends - and there is a separate Innisfree building with a workshop and its own cafe. The tea is grown and processed at scale rather than by hand, which distinguishes it from Hadong, and the operation is a commercial one that happens to be very pleasant to visit. Combining it with Camellia Hill or the south-west coast is the usual pattern.

When to go

April to June and September to October. Weekday mornings avoid the cafe queue, which at weekends can be very long. The fields are green year round.

What to expect

The museum is free but small, and most visitors are there for the cafe and the photographs. It is a corporate plantation and visitor centre, not a traditional tea village.
