UNESCO World Heritage
When the Baekje court moved south in 475 it settled at Ungjin, now Gongju, and fortified the hill above the river. Gongsanseong is what remains: an earth core faced in stone, a circuit of roughly two and a half kilometres following the ridge, with gates, a pavilion above the water and the excavated foundation platforms of buildings inside. The walls you walk on are largely later Joseon work laid over the Baekje line, and most of the timber is reconstruction, so the interest is in the shape of the place rather than its fabric. It takes about an hour to go round, with the Geum river on one side and the town on the other.
What you actually see
- The wall circuit - about an hour on the ramparts, up and down the ridge.
- Gongbungnu - the north gate pavilion looking out over the Geum river.
- The building platforms - excavated foundations of the royal compound inside.
- The night lighting - the walls and gates lit after dark for much of the year.
When to go
Spring and autumn are comfortable; the ridge walk is exposed and Gongju is hot in July and August. Late afternoon into the evening is the best window, and the walls are lit after dark through most of the year. The regional Baekje festival alternates between Gongju and Buyeo in autumn and fills both towns.
Honest expectations
Almost everything above ground is reconstruction, and the Baekje layer survives mainly as foundation outlines that need the site museum to make any sense. The circuit has several short steep climbs and long runs of steps. Gongju is off the main high-speed line and its station is well outside town. There is little shade on the walls.
Nearby
The Songsan-ri tombs and the Gongju national museum are a short walk; Buyeo is forty minutes south.
