Ovech Fortress

Ovech occupies a flat-topped limestone plateau above Provadia west of Varna, with vertical cliffs of around forty metres on every side, which made walls largely unnecessary and left the defence to the rock itself. It was fortified from late Roman times through the Byzantine, Bulgarian and Ottoman periods, and what survives is gates, tower foundations, cistern systems, church plans and a well cut about eighty metres down through the rock to the water table, which is the most impressive single thing on the site. Access was originally by a rock-cut stair and a bridge, and a modern road now reaches the top. The plateau is bare and open with a long view over the plain and the Provadia salt works.

When to go

April to October. Two hours. There is no shade on the plateau and summer is hot. Late afternoon light over the plain is best. Weekdays are quiet.

Before you go

There is no shade anywhere on top. Cliff edges are largely unfenced. Most of the site is at foundation level. Interpretation is limited. Provadia itself is a plain industrial town.
