King Munmu began this temple to protect the coast and died before it was finished; his son completed it in 682 and named it Gameunsa, gratitude to the father. Nothing stands now but the two stone pagodas, each about thirteen metres, twin three-storey towers on a wide platform in an open field - the earliest pair of their kind and the model for Silla pagoda design afterwards. Both were dismantled for repair in the twentieth century and yielded elaborate gilt-bronze reliquaries, small architectural shrines with musicians and guardians, now among the best-known objects in Korean art. The site's other feature is structural: excavation showed a stone-lined cavity beneath the main hall floor with a channel running toward the sea, matching a record that the building was made so the king's dragon spirit could enter. The field is bare, exposed, and free to walk. The islet identified with his tomb is two kilometres east.

What you actually see

  • The twin pagodas - two three-storey towers on the platform.
  • The hall foundations - the cavity and sea channel below.
  • The open field - the site cleared, with the hills behind.
  • The reliquary story - the finds now in national collections.

When to go

April to June and September to November. Late afternoon light on the stone is the best of it. No shade at all - avoid summer midday.

Honest expectations

Two pagodas in a field, free, with limited interpretation on site. The famous reliquaries are in museums elsewhere. Fifteen to twenty minutes unless you read the panels closely.

Nearby

Munmu's rock tomb is two kilometres east at Bonggil; Gyeongju is 28 km inland.
