Vlkolinec

Vlkolinec is a tiny preserved village of traditional log houses perched high on a mountain slope in northern Slovakia, a UNESCO site and one of the best-surviving examples of a traditional Central European wooden mountain settlement. Its brightly painted timber cottages, wooden bell tower and cobbled lane, still lived in, offer a rare picture of old rural life.

Background

The earliest written record of the village dates from 1376, and it was joined to Ružomberok after 1882. Its name probably comes from the Slovak word vlk, meaning wolf. It has been on the UNESCO list since 1993, and it is among ten Slovak villages protected as a folk architecture reservation, as an untouched example of the countryside building of the Northern Carpathians. More than 45 log houses survive, each with two or three rooms, along with an 18th-century wooden belfry and a baroque chapel. Houses No. 16 and 17 now hold a folk museum of everyday tools and work. The village lies at 718 metres and has a population of 13.
