The Demänovská Caves

The Demänovská valley cuts into the Low Tatras and holds one of the longest cave systems in the region, of which two sections are open to visitors and they could hardly be more different. The Cave of Liberty, found in 1921, is the decorated one, with flowstone curtains, pools and formations stained red and orange by iron in the rock, and a route of over a kilometre through chambers and along an underground stream. The Ice Cave, higher up the valley and known since the Middle Ages, holds permanent ice: floor sheets, columns and cascades that persist year-round because the cave's shape traps cold winter air. Both are guided, both are cold, and the walk up to each from the road is a climb in itself.

When to go

The Cave of Liberty runs most of the year; the Ice Cave has a shorter season, roughly mid-May to September, and the ice is at its best in late spring. Tours are timed and can sell out in July and August, so arrive early or book.

Honest expectations

Both caves are around 6 to 8 degrees inside, and people arrive in shorts and suffer. The approach walks are steep, twenty to thirty minutes uphill, and are not optional. Tours are guided in Slovak with printed translations rather than full commentary in other languages. Photography rules vary and are often restrictive.
