Kvačianska Valley

The Kvačianska valley cuts through limestone between Kvačany and Huty in Liptov, narrow enough that the path runs beside the stream under cliffs for most of it, and halfway along at Oblazy stand two water mills, restored and working, that once served the villages at each end. There is no road: the mills are reached only on foot, which is why they survived. The walk through takes a couple of hours end to end.

What you actually see

• The Oblazy mills - two restored water mills working in the middle of the valley.
• The gorge - narrow limestone walls closing round the path and stream.
• The wooden flumes - the channels carrying water to the mill wheels.
• The through walk - a route from Kvacany to Huty taking a couple of hours.

When to go

May to October is the walking season. Autumn colour in the valley is the best of the year. The path is icy and dangerous in winter.

Honest expectations

The path is rough with stream crossings and short ladder sections. The mills keep seasonal hours and are closed in winter. There is no vehicle access at all.
