Getting thereFrom Zverovka above Zuberec in Orava, about 90 km east of Zilina
EntryFree; parking charged

The Roháče are the highest and sharpest part of the Western Tatras, above the Orava valley, with peaks over two thousand metres, a chain of small glacial tarns in the Roháčska valley and a waterfall on the stream below them. The rock is less spectacular than the High Tatras but the walking is as good and the crowds are a fraction. The main circuit goes up past the tarns and onto the ridge at Volovec.

What you actually see

  • The Rohacske tarns - a chain of small glacial lakes in the upper valley.
  • The waterfall - a cascade on the stream below the tarns.
  • The ridge - the crest at Volovec and Ostry Rohac, on the Polish border.
  • The quiet - a fraction of the traffic of the High Tatras next door.

When to go

June to October is the walking season; snow lies late in the upper valley. Trails above the tree line close from November to mid-June. Weather changes fast on the ridge.

Honest expectations

High trails are closed by regulation from November to mid-June and the closure is enforced. The ridge sections have chains and exposure. Parking at Zverovka fills early at weekends.

Nearby

Zuberec is below, and the High Tatras are east.
