Sint Maarten Museum
A small museum on Front Street, with material from a wrecked British warship.

The Sint Maarten Museum occupies a building on Front Street in Philipsburg and covers the island's history in a few rooms: Amerindian material, the salt trade, plantation life, hurricanes, and objects raised from HMS Proselyte, a British frigate that struck the reef off Fort Amsterdam in 1801. The heritage foundation that runs it does so on very little money. The building itself is one of the older structures on Front Street and part of what is on show.

When to go
December to April is the high season and opening is most reliable. Hours are limited and worth confirming. Cruise days are busiest.

It is small and an hour is more than enough. Funding is limited and the displays show it. Opening hours are irregular and it has been closed for periods.
