Nick Maley worked on the creature and makeup effects for a long list of films from the 1970s and 1980s, including the building of Yoda for The Empire Strikes Back, and he settled on Sint Maarten and put his working material into a small museum on Front Street: moulds, masks, props, drawings and the story of how the effects were made before computers did it. The artist is often in the shop himself and will talk through the work if he has the time.

What you actually see

  • The creature moulds - the working material from the effects shop.
  • The masks and props - pieces used in the films themselves.
  • The pre-digital methods - how effects were built by hand.
  • The personal collection - one artist's own accumulated work.

When to go

December to April is the high season and opening is most reliable. Cruise ship days are busiest. Hours are worth confirming.

Honest expectations

It is one room and a small one. The appeal depends almost entirely on caring about the films involved. Opening hours are irregular outside the high season.

Nearby

The Sint Maarten Museum is nearby, and the waterfront is south.
