The St Maarten Carnival

Each April the Dutch side detonates its cultural year: St Maarten Carnival runs weeks deep - among the Caribbean's longer festivals - with the Carnival Village's stage nights working calypso, soca and bouyon toward the crescendos, jouvert morning launching paint-and-powder dawn madness through Philipsburg, and the Grand Parades rolling mas bands of feathers, sequins and steel through streets that surrender entirely. The Village's food stalls run johnnycake-to-conch marathons, troupes rehearse all spring for their crossings, and visitors time flights around it - the island's fullest self, scheduled annually.
