Getting thereIn the northeast of Statia near Lynch Bay; road from Oranjestad, visits by arrangement
EntryDonation; visits by arrangement

The Lynch plantation museum is two small wooden buildings on a family smallholding in Statia's northeast, kept by the Berkel family with the furniture, tools, kitchen equipment and photographs of the household as it was through the first half of the twentieth century. It shows how an ordinary Statian family actually lived and worked, which the island's grander colonial ruins do not. Visits are arranged in advance.

What you actually see

  • The two buildings - the small wooden houses of the smallholding.
  • The household contents - furniture, tools and kitchen equipment left in place.
  • The photographs - the family record through the twentieth century.
  • The ordinary scale - a working family's life rather than a colonial estate.

When to go

December to April is the main visitor season. Visits must be arranged in advance. The buildings are hot in the middle of the day.

Honest expectations

There are no set opening hours and a visit must be arranged by phone beforehand. The museum is small and an hour covers it. Access depends on the family being available.

Nearby

Zeelandia Beach is south, and Oranjestad is southwest.
