Viminacium

Viminacium was the capital of the Roman province of Moesia Superior and the base of the Seventh Claudian legion, a city of perhaps forty thousand people on the Danube frontier with an amphitheatre, baths, aqueducts and an enormous cemetery. Because the site was never built over, excavation has been able to work across the whole city, and the visitor route takes in the amphitheatre, a bath complex, painted tombs with rare late-Roman wall painting, and a reconstructed villa. The surrounding coal mine that funds much of the work also turned up mammoth remains, and a nearly complete skeleton nicknamed Vika is displayed in a hall on site. Tours are guided and cover a lot of ground, some of it by shuttle.

What you actually see

• The amphitheatre - the excavated arena of the legionary city.
• Painted tombs - late-Roman wall painting preserved underground.
• The mammoth hall - the skeleton found in the neighbouring mine.
• Reconstructions - a rebuilt villa and thermae to show the scale.

When to go

April to October; much of the route is outdoors and hot in midsummer. Tours run at set times and the last one leaves well before closing, so arriving early in the afternoon at the latest matters.

Honest expectations

Visits are guided only, on a fixed route, and cannot be wandered independently. The setting is beside an open-cast coal mine and a power station, which is visually intrusive. Some structures are modern reconstructions rather than original fabric, which is not always made clear.
