Silver Lake

Srebrno Jezero, the Silver Lake, is a former side channel of the Danube closed off at both ends in the 1970s, leaving a still lake about fourteen kilometres long with clear warm water, sandy beaches and no current, which made it the most developed inland resort in Serbia. Along the shore are hotels, apartments, restaurants and campsites, with pedalos, waterslides and a promenade, and it fills with Serbian families through July and August. Fishing is a serious business here, with carp and catfish, and competitions run through the season. It is unashamedly a domestic holiday place rather than a scenic destination, and it works as a base for the Danube fortresses and Viminacium nearby.

When to go

June to September, with July and August the busiest and warmest. Outside those months most facilities close and the resort is empty. Spring and autumn suit fishing better than swimming.

Honest expectations

This is a built-up domestic resort with heavy summer crowds and traffic, not a quiet lake. Development along the shore is dense and not always attractive. Prices rise sharply in peak weeks. Water quality is generally good but the lake is closed to current, so it depends on management.
