Bač Fortress

Bač fortress was built in the fourteenth century on an island in the marshes of the Mostonga, a Hungarian royal stronghold with a donjon, curtain walls and towers approached by a causeway, and it is the most complete medieval fortress surviving in Vojvodina. Long neglected, it has been under a careful restoration programme that has consolidated the donjon and opened parts to visitors, with a viewing platform on the tower. The wider Bač area has been proposed for World Heritage listing as a cultural landscape, taking in the fortress, a Franciscan monastery in the town with medieval fabric under baroque remodelling, a Turkish bath, and the Bođani monastery with eighteenth-century frescoes nearby. Together they make a compact circuit through several layers of the region's history.

History

An Avar fortress stood at Bač in 873, and by the turn of the first millennium the town, linked to the Danube by the Mostonga, was well fortified. King Charles Robert began the present fortress in 1338-42, it reached its full extent by the 16th century, and Archbishop Péter Váradi enlarged it and dredged the Mostonga so that ships from the Danube could reach it (Wikipedia, Bač Fortress).

When to go

April to October; the fortress is outdoors and exposed. Restoration work has meant partial closures at times, so checking before a long drive is sensible. Winter access is limited.

Good to know

The fortress is a consolidated ruin rather than a furnished castle, and parts remain closed during works. Interpretation is limited in English. Bač is small with few services. Public transport is poor and a car is effectively needed for the wider circuit.
