The Three Towers of Monte Titano

The Three Towers of San Marino, strung dramatically along the crest of Monte Titano, are the emblem and crowning glory of the world's oldest surviving republic, part of its UNESCO World Heritage listing. Perched on the rocky ridge above the historic capital, the three medieval fortifications, Guaita, the oldest, Cesta, the highest, housing a museum of ancient arms, and the smaller, more distant Montale, once guarded the tiny mountain state. When to go

April to October, for the mildest weather and clearest views, ideal for walking the ridge between the towers; the views are spectacular on a clear day, stretching to the Adriatic coast. Summer can be busy with day-trippers, so an earlier or later visit is calmer, and the towers and old town are floodlit and atmospheric in the evening.

Honest expectations

San Marino is a hugely popular day-trip destination, so the towers and old town can get crowded and touristy, lined with souvenir shops, especially in summer; the towers themselves are compact. The clifftop walk and the breathtaking views, though, along with the sense of history in the world's oldest republic, make the Three Towers a genuinely lovely and iconic sight, best enjoyed early or late to savour the panoramas in peace.
