Vermont Nature Trail

The Vermont loop climbs through the upper Buccament Valley's rainforest with one headline resident: the Saint Vincent parrot, the country's national bird, a large Amazon in bronze, blue and gold that lives nowhere else on earth. A couple of hours of well-made trail rise through plantation edge into old-growth forest to a parrot lookout over the canopy, where dawn and dusk flights give the best odds - pairs barrelling across the valley, announcing themselves before they show. Hummingbirds, tremblers and the whistling of solitaires fill the gaps, and the forest itself - buttressed trunks, heliconia understorey - rewards the walk even on a parrotless day.

December to May keeps the trail firmest; the parrots fly year round with early morning the reliable slot. A local guide roughly doubles the odds and triples the interpretation.

Honest expectations

Parrots are wild and owe nobody an appearance - build in the lookout hour and bring binoculars, or risk a lovely but bird-light walk. The loop is moderately steep and slick after rain. Facilities are a shelter and signage; carry water. Sightings feel earned here rather than staged - that is the value.
