Étang de Mirande

The Étang de Mirande sits in the low bare hills behind Saint-Pierre town, one of the many ponds scattered across an island whose interior is more water and rock than anything else, with a track around it and boggy ground on the approaches. The vegetation is heath and low scrub because nothing taller survives the wind. It is a short walk from town and a common local circuit.

When to go

June to September is the workable season. Ground is wettest in spring. Fog closes the interior in often through the summer.

Good to know

The ground is boggy and proper boots matter. Fog comes down fast in the interior and the tracks are not always obvious. There are no facilities of any kind.
