The Anse du Gouvernement lies just around the shore from Saint-Pierre town, a small cove of shingle and rock below low ground with the harbour entrance and the Île aux Marins in view across the water. It is the nearest piece of open shore to the town and people walk out to it in the evening. The name comes from the administration's old ground above the cove.

It is a small cove and half an hour covers it. There is no beach in the sunbathing sense; this is North Atlantic shingle. The wind off the water is cold most of the year.
