Dune de Langlade

The dune is a twelve kilometre bar of sand that ties Miquelon to Langlade, built up over the last few centuries where two islands were once separate, and the road south runs the length of it with the open Atlantic on one side and the Grand Barachois lagoon on the other. Horses turned out to graze wander loose along it. Seals haul out on the sand and the wind runs unbroken from end to end.

When to go

June to September is the workable season. Fog closes in often through the summer. Winter storms cut the road at times.

Things to know

Fog can reduce visibility to nothing for days at a stretch. There is no shelter anywhere along the dune and the wind is constant. Seals should be watched from a distance and not approached.
