Micoud

Micoud sits on Saint Lucia's east coast, a fishing town with boats on the beach and a church above them, and it holds one of the strongest Kwéyòl traditions on the island: the La Rose flower festival in August fills the streets, and Jounen Kwéyòl in October is celebrated here as thoroughly as anywhere. The town is workaday the rest of the year with the Atlantic in front of it. The town is named after a French colonial administrator and is one of the oldest settlements on this coast.

Background

Micoud is the seat of Micoud District, one of the 10 districts of Saint Lucia, which were once known as quarters. The district covers 112.1 square kilometres and is split into 69 second-order administrative divisions. The former Praslin Quarter was merged into it, and the 2010 Census did not count Praslin separately. Census figures put the district population at 16,143 in 2002 and 16,284 in 2010, a density of 145 people per square kilometre. Within its bounds lie three forest or nature reserves, three significant islands and as many significant mountains.

December to April is the dry season. La Rose falls in August and Jounen Kwéyòl in October. The town is quiet outside festivals.

Practical notes

There is little for a visitor outside festival times. Facilities are basic. The east coast surf makes swimming here unwise.
