Latille and Errard Falls

Saint Lucia's interior is full of small waterfalls and two are set up for visitors without being overrun. Latille, near Micoud in the southeast, drops about six metres into a shallow pool in a small private garden planted with fruit and flowering trees, with a set of terraces and a swimmable pool at the bottom. Errard, inland from Dennery, is taller at around fifteen metres and is reached by a walk of about twenty minutes through a working cocoa and spice estate, with the guide pointing out what is growing on the way. Both are modest, both are quiet, and both are a long way from a tour bus.

What you actually see

• Latille Falls - a six-metre drop into a garden with a swimmable pool.
• Errard Falls - fifteen metres, at the end of a cocoa estate walk.
• The cocoa estate - the working plantation the Errard trail crosses.
• The quiet - neither is on the standard excursion circuit.

When to go

December to April is the drier season; after heavy rain both run brown and the trails are slippery. Mornings are quiet. Both are on the eastern side of the island and are best combined with the east coast road.

Honest expectations

Both are small and neither justifies a long journey alone; they work as part of an eastern circuit. The access roads are rough. The Errard walk is muddy and involves river crossings. Facilities at both are minimal and hours are informal.
