El Chiflon

The San Vicente river leaves the Comitan plateau in style: at El Chiflon it steps off the edge in a chain of five cascades - Suspiro, Ala de Angel, Velo de Novia, Arcoiris and Quinceanera - each pouring mineral-turquoise water into pools of implausible color, with the third firing the full charge: the Velo de Novia, the Bridal Veil, a 120-metre plume exploding off the cliff in a white curtain whose spray soaks the upper lookout and everyone proud enough to climb to it. A well-built trail - shaded, stepped, roughly a kilometre and a half of honest ascent - follows the river up the whole sequence, with swimming zones roped in the lower jade pools, palapa restaurants and zip lines at the ejido bases, and miradors staged for each fall. Two neighboring communities run parallel banks and share the spectacle. Dry-season months keep the water at its bluest; the wet season converts the Veil into a thundering brown colossus worth seeing on its own violent terms, minus the swim.

When to go

December to May for turquoise water and safe swimming; mornings for soft light and space. Wet months trade color for raw power.

Honest expectations

The climb to the top lookout is sweaty and the spray total - protect cameras and expect soaked clothes. Swim only in marked zones with the jackets provided. Weekends bring highland families in cheerful numbers.
