While tour buses stream to Agua Azul, Palenque's locals turn the other way. The cascadas of Roberto Barrios, half an hour from town in an ejido village, drop the same mineral-turquoise water down a friendlier staircase: five-odd tiers of travertine terraces, each pouring into wide swimming pools over limestone worn to slides - and sliding is the local sport, village kids demonstrating the polished chutes between tiers with offhand mastery that visitors imitate at their own calibration. The pools alternate personalities - broad jade lagoons for floating, curtained grottos behind the falls, jacuzzi shelves where the current massages shoulders - all framed in jungle that leans close enough to drip. Paths and rough steps descend tier to tier; village guides point out the safe slides and the not-slides, palapa comedores fry quesadillas and river fish, and the whole operation stays community-priced and community-paced. In rainy months the water muscles up and browns; the December-to-May window keeps the postcard blues.

When to go

December to May for the bluest, calmest water; mornings beat both crowds and afternoon storms. After heavy rain, respect the current and the guides' word.

Honest expectations

Rocks are genuinely slippery - water shoes and humility prevent most injuries; slide only where locals show. Facilities are simple, cash-only. It is busier than it was, still far calmer than Agua Azul.
