El Aguacero

El Aguacero earns its visitors twice - once on the way down, thoroughly on the way back up. From the ejido gate at the rim of La Venta canyon, a concrete-and-timber stairway of roughly seven hundred steps descends the jungle wall to the river, where the spectacle unrolls along the bank: the Aguacero itself, not a single plunge but a wide system of spring-fed curtains - water combing over travertine ledges and hanging moss in dozens of parallel veils, some thundering, some drizzling like their name's "downpour" - pouring from the cliff into pools and channels along the green river. Visitors wade the shallows between falls, shower under the gentler veils, and follow the bank path to caves behind the water; the karst above feeds the springs year-round, so even dry-season flow stays generous while the river runs clear jade. The canyon setting seals it - parrots crossing between walls, the El Ocote forest leaning over the rim. Then the steps present their bill, one landing at a time.

When to go

November to May for clear pools and manageable current; mornings beat both heat and weekend crowds from Tuxtla. Rainy months swell the river and can close the bank paths.

Honest expectations

The climb out is real exercise in real humidity - water, pacing and no shame in pauses. Facilities sit at the rim only. Currents deserve respect beyond the marked shallows.
