Anse Louvet

Anse Louvet is on Saint Lucia's northeastern coast at the end of a track rough enough that most people never get there, a beach of dark sand between headlands with the Atlantic coming in hard and an old estate ruin above it. Leatherback turtles nest along this stretch. There is nothing built and nobody there. The walk or drive in is the greater part of the day. The estate above was one of several worked on this coast before the roads made the west side dominant.

What you actually see

• The dark sand - the volcanic beach between its headlands.
• The estate ruin - the remains standing above the shore.
• The turtle nesting - leatherbacks using this coast in season.
• The isolation - a beach almost nobody reaches.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the track is at its best. Leatherbacks nest around March to July. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Honest expectations

The track needs four wheel drive and is impassable after rain. Swimming is dangerous because of the surf and undertow. There are no facilities of any kind.
