Fishing Village Kaliningrad

The Fish Village was built between about 2006 and 2010 on the Pregolya embankment opposite the cathedral island, in a half-timbered and stepped-gable manner meant to recall the Koenigsberg that was destroyed in the August 1944 air raids and the fighting of 1945. Nothing here is old. Behind the facades are hotels, restaurants, offices and shops. The pieces worth the walk are the lighthouse tower with a viewing platform over the river and the cathedral, a swing footbridge crossing to Kneiphof, and a moored museum ship. Local opinion is divided in the usual way between those who welcome anything that fills the emptiness left in the city centre and those who regard it as a stage set standing in for a lost city. What it does provide is a coherent riverside walk in a centre that otherwise has large gaps and heavy roads through it.

May to September. One to two hours, usually combined with the cathedral.

Honest expectations

It is entirely new construction and reads that way close up. Restaurants are priced for tourists. The area is small and quickly walked. The actual historic city that this evokes was destroyed and is not recoverable here.
