Koenigsberg Cathedral

The cathedral was begun in 1333 in brick Gothic on Kneiphof, one of the islands of the Pregel around which the old city grew, and it was the main church of the region for six centuries. In August 1944 the centre of Koenigsberg was destroyed by air raids and the cathedral was left a roofless shell; it stood that way for decades while the ruins of the rest of the island were cleared, leaving it alone on empty ground. Restoration from 1992, with German funding, rebuilt the roof, tower and spires, and it now works as a concert hall and museum rather than a church, with two organs installed for recitals given daily. Immanuel Kant, who lived his whole life in the city and taught at its university, is buried in a colonnaded tomb built against the north wall in 1924; that structure survived the raids when almost nothing else did. The island around it is now parkland.

When to go

May to September. One to two hours including a recital. Organ concerts run most days at set times.

Honest expectations

It is not a working church but a concert hall and museum. Much of the fabric is 1990s reconstruction rather than medieval. The museum is small and largely Russian-labelled. Recitals are ticketed separately and short.
