Trovants Museum Reserve

Trovanți are concretions: lumps of sand cemented by calcium carbonate inside a looser sandstone, exposed as the surrounding material erodes away. They come out of the ground as smooth grey blobs and pillows, some the size of a football and some several metres across, with bulges and knobs that give them an unmistakably organic look. The local name, the growing stones, comes from what happens when they get wet: rainwater dissolves and redeposits mineral in the outer layer, so knobs slowly enlarge and new bulges appear over long periods. Cut in half, they show concentric rings. A small open-air reserve at Costești gathers a group of them on a hillside with a path and information boards, and more sit in the fields and gardens around the village, where they have been used as gateposts and garden ornaments for generations.

When to go

Spring to autumn; the site is small, open and unshaded. After rain the stones darken and the surface texture reads more clearly, which is the better photographic condition. Winter access is possible but the path is muddy.

Honest expectations

This takes half an hour at most and the reserve is modest, with a rough path and basic signage. The growth is measured over years, not visible during a visit, and the word museum promises more than exists. Some visitors find the entry fee steep for the size of the site. Treat it as a curious roadside stop on the way between Vâlcea and Gorj.
