Topoloveni Magiun

Magiun is a plum spread made across the region, but the Topoloveni version has a documented method and a protected name: several local plum varieties are mixed, cooked slowly in open vats for many hours until the water evaporates and the sugars concentrate, with no added sugar, pectin or preservative of any kind. The result is dark, dense and less sweet than a jam, and it keeps for years. Production here dates to a small factory opened in 1914, and in 2011 the product became the first Romanian food to receive protected geographical indication status from the European Union, which fixed the recipe and the area. The modern producer runs the operation on the same principle and takes visitors by arrangement, showing the vats and the plum yard, and sells at the gate. Autumn, when lorries of plums arrive and the whole place smells of cooking fruit, is the time to see it working.

When to go

September and October, when the plum harvest arrives and production runs at full tilt; outside that season there is less to see. Visits need arranging in advance rather than turning up. The product is sold in shops nationwide year-round.

Honest expectations

This is a working food factory, not a visitor centre: tours depend on staff availability and are not a polished experience. There is little to occupy more than an hour. The town itself is unremarkable. Anyone expecting a sweet jam should know that magiun is dark, tart and thick.
