Viscri and the Saxon Fortified Churches

From the twelfth century, German-speaking settlers invited into Transylvania built villages on a distinctive plan, with long single-street cores of gabled houses and, at the centre, a church wrapped in defensive walls, towers and storerooms where the whole community and its food could shelter behind the gates. Seven of these villages carry World Heritage listing, and the best known is Viscri, a single unpaved street of whitewashed and pastel houses running up to a chalk-white fortified church whose tower you can climb for a view over the pantiled roofs and hills beyond. The Saxon population largely left in the late twentieth century, and the villages went quiet; conservation projects have since restored houses, revived crafts and brought back guesthouses. Other fine examples nearby include Biertan, Prejmer and Câlnic, each different in scale and character.

When to go

May to September is greenest and best for the unpaved lanes, which turn to mud in wet weather; late spring brings wildflower meadows that are among the richest in Europe. The churches keep informal hours and are often opened by a keyholder, so mid-morning to late afternoon is safest.

Practical notes

The villages are scattered on minor roads and Viscri's access road is unpaved and rough, so a car matters and a low-clearance one will suffer. Facilities are simple guesthouses rather than hotels, and the churches are opened by a local keyholder rather than staffed, so opening can be unpredictable. Viscri has become well known and can feel busy with day visitors in summer, while its neighbours stay quiet.

Sighișoara and Brașov are within an hour or two; Rupea's hilltop fortress is on the main road.
