Rupea Citadel

Rupea stands on an isolated basalt outcrop above the road, and its shape follows the hill: three enclosures rise in a spiral, the lower, middle and upper citadel, linked by ramps and gates so that an attacker taking one level still faced the next. The site has been occupied since prehistory and the fortress as it stands took form from the fourteenth century, serving the Saxon community of the surrounding villages as a refuge. It was abandoned in the nineteenth century after a storm damaged the roofs and fell into ruin, then was heavily restored with European funding in the 2010s. From the top the view runs across the Transylvanian plateau in every direction, and the fortress itself is the best example in Romania of how a defensive site was shaped entirely by its hill. It sits directly on the main road between Brașov and Sighișoara, which makes it an easy stop.

• The restored towers - rebuilt roofs and walkways from the 2010s work.

When to go

April to October, though it opens year-round with reduced winter hours. Late afternoon light on the basalt is best, and the site is quieter then. It is exposed, so avoid the middle of a hot day.

Honest expectations

The restoration is thorough to the point of feeling new in places, with modern timber and clean masonry replacing the picturesque ruin visible in older photographs. Interpretation is limited and largely in Romanian. The climb from the car park is steep and there is little shade. Half an hour to an hour is enough for most visitors.
