Prague Castle, sprawled across the hill above the Vltava, is the largest coherent ancient castle complex in the world, a thousand-year seat of Bohemian kings and now the Czech president. Within its walls rise the soaring Gothic St Vitus Cathedral, the old royal palace, basilicas, gardens and the tiny colourful houses of Golden Lane.

Year-round; the grounds are free and open long hours, with the buildings ticketed. A clear day suits the views over the city. Early or late avoids the worst crowds.

It is vast and very busy, with airport-style security to enter and separate tickets for the buildings, so allow time and plan. St Vitus is often packed. The grounds and views are free and a highlight in themselves.
