Porolissum

Porolissum began as a military complex guarding the northern approaches to Roman Dacia and grew into a city that spread down the ridge below the fort, with an amphitheatre, customs house, temples and a civilian town. It was among the largest Roman sites in the province and remains one of the largest archaeological sites in Romania, but it sees a fraction of the visitors of better-known places, so it is often walked in near solitude. Excavation has been going on for decades and continues, and parts of the site have been reconstructed, including a stretch of the fort gate rebuilt in the 1980s in a manner that archaeologists have criticised as speculative. The setting is what makes it: an open ridge with wide views over the Sălaj hills, the outlines of streets and buildings in the grass, and the amphitheatre cut into the slope.

When to go

April to October. Spring and autumn give the best light across the ridge and the shortest grass. The site is exposed with no shade, so midsummer afternoons are punishing. Access tracks are poor in wet weather.

Honest expectations

Interpretation is minimal and much of what you see requires a plan to make sense of. The reconstruction at the gate is contested and looks jarringly new. Facilities amount to a ticket hut. The approach road is unsurfaced in places. Come for the scale and the emptiness rather than for standing architecture.
