Băile Felix

Băile Felix sits on a thermal aquifer that delivers water at around forty degrees, and it has been used since at least the medieval period, with the monks of a nearby monastery credited with the first baths. Today it is the largest spa resort in the country, geared to treatment as much as leisure: sanatoria and hotels with medical departments treat rheumatic and post-traumatic conditions, alongside open-air and indoor pools, waterslides and a modern aquapark. Its curiosity is botanical. The Pețea thermal lake nearby carries Nymphaea lotus var. thermalis, a water lily surviving from an earlier warm period, along with an endemic snail and fish; the lake dried in 2015 when the aquifer was overdrawn, and the plants persist through conservation efforts and a reserve. The resort itself is functional rather than beautiful, a spread of hotels and bath houses among parkland.

When to go

Year-round, and winter is arguably best, when bathing outdoors in steam with frost on the trees is the point. Summer brings families and the aquapark crowds. Treatment stays follow their own calendar and hotels fill with long-stay guests.

Honest expectations

The resort is unattractive architecturally, dominated by large communist-era sanatoria alongside newer hotels. It is a medical spa first, so the atmosphere is more clinic than retreat in places. The thermal lily reserve is protected and viewing is restricted; you cannot swim there. Pools get crowded at weekends.
